Urban Green at Startup Village

Startup Village serves as a test space for ‘Urban Green’ education.

New greening solutions for city streets, houses and roofs are hopeful developments towards combating climate change. ‘Urban Green’ initiatives contribute to city living by developing and maintaining a green environment. Startup Village plays a key role as a learning space for MBO and HBO level students in several fields of greening education, to bring theory into practice. Based on a multidisciplinary approach, students test various green concepts to measure the effects on people, flora, fauna, and working & living environments. The latest results will be presented at Startup Village on January 16, 2018.

Teaching green

A collaboration of greening and university organizations are working together on a 3-year project to develop new educational programs and integral research to establish innovations and educate a new generation of greening experts. Bringing together social and technical renewal is a central point in this approach. The project aims to develop a curriculum and train teachers to adapt to new greening trends in their teaching. Some of the collaborating parties include Green Art Solutions, ACE, Royal Flora Holland, Hogeschool van Amsterdam and Aeres Hogeschool.

Green business

As the city is transitioning, it is important to adjust accordingly. At ACE, we are happy to provide a place at Startup Village where students can learn about greening solutions, as well as learning how to develop a business plan around implementing these solutions in a sustainable way. Two students from Aeres Hogeschool are currently building self-irrigating green walls at Startup Village. Even villagers are included in the project, as some are putting their office to the disposal of the greening projects.
